Slowly raising the bamboo curtain to the outside world, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam's new slogan is it's a country, not a war. This new catch-phrase is perhaps indicative of its drive toward taking steps toward modernization and, more importantly, inviting foreign investment, one of which is tourism. With both an olive branch extended in one hand and the other hand clenched, Vietnam is apprehensively (and understandably so) courting the outside world while adjusting to the growing social and economical changes of development.
What to see
Although Vietnam is predicted to be the next tiger economy, throughout the countryside, many of the images of Vietnam remain the same: people bent over in rice fields, women carrying heavy baskets suspended on sticks across their shoulders, and farmers sowing rice seeds with water buffalo. For travelers, much like the days when Thailand was new and cheap, Vietnam has emerged as the hippest country on the Southeast Asia circuit.
With fantastic landscapes, like Mekong Delta and Halong Bay, and vibrant cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is a great country for the curious traveler. Whether you chose to lounge on one of the country's exquisite beaches, trek through the mountains inland, visit some of the War's hotspots, or try to navigate the busy city roads on a scooter, Vietnam is a country where you can still find a travel bargain without being overwhelmed by bargain travel seekers around you.
