If you're looking for an obscure destination with instant travel credibility, this book-end of the Arabian Peninsula may be for you. Although still having trouble with violent conflicts and a recent terrorist attack in summer 2007, Yemen is bouncing back to become an example of the unspoiled Middle East.

What to do

Traveling to Yemen offers a chance to dive back into the history of the Middle East. The Old City of Sana'a is an ancient city that has been inhabited for over 2,500 years and a major center of Islam early on. Traditional building practices and over a hundred mosques make this a top destination in Yemen.

Hiking through the Haraz Mountains is another exciting option for your trip to Yemen. The views are breathtaking and the mountains spectacular, but you should hire a guide to help you negotiate the area.

Getting there

Flights to Yemen arrive in the capital city of Sana'a. Flights generally run between Sana'a and Dubai as well as several cities in Europe and Northern Africa. The best way to get into Yemen is a flight through Dubai.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Yemen is not up to the standards of Europe or the rich neighboring nations of the United Arab Emirates or Qatar, but an adventurous and rugged traveler will find plenty of places to sleep if they don't mind a mattress on the floor in the home of a welcoming family.
