9 Things to Do in Cape May, New Jersey

The cool thing about Cape May is that it’s not just about summertime fun - the city has worked hard for decades to develop it into a year-round destination, and that work has paid off in spades. Any trip to the Eastern Seaboard should include Cape May; and for those of you located anywhere between DC and New York, it should go on your list of weekend getaways pronto.

New Jersey Travel Guide Overview

Jersey has long occupied the position of little brother to New York and the state has racked up a fair share of insulting nicknames from its neighbors (and residents alike). Officially it's the Garden State and has quite a bit of diversity packed into its 7400 square miles.

Probably most notable are New Jersey's beaches, called The Shore by locals, the white sand beaches hug much of the coast line. Summer finds them teeming with people, when there aren't pollution scares. Listen closely for the charming Jersey accent which abounds; it goes something like, "Eh...oh...fug-get about it."

Atlantic City is the East Coast's Vegas, without the glitz, glamour or spectacle. It's only really got the gambling. To be fair, things in the city are looking up and AC has seen stellar new restaurants open and many of its casino hotels are being renovated. Still, for the most part you'll find herds of blue-haired ladies plunking quarters into slot machines all day before catching the bus back to wherever they came from. The boardwalk is seedy and depressing, but don't miss out on the salt water taffy which AC is famous for.

Beyond the beaches, there's tons of farm land (remember, Garden State) as well as many quaint towns and sprawling suburbia throughout New Jersey. The northern heights area has gorgeous towns with palatial houses perched on cliff-tops.
