Kalahari - Where to the Soul Runs Free

Northern Cape, South Africa
By Rikus Visser

Silence. A commodity that has become so scarce in the Western society, but deep in the Kalahari Desert it is so overwhelming that you can hear it and it is music to the heart.

In the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, tugged away in a thin strip of land between Namibia on the one side and Botswana on the other, lies a park that might not be world-renowned (maybe because you will obviously not see elephant in this harsh conditions), but it offers some of the hidden gems we all yearn for: solitude and peace.

It used to be called the Kala ...

Egypt 's Famous Trio

Egypt
By Vanya Akraboff

Heading to Egypt? The myriad prospects of ancient history (pyramids!), packaged tours, bustling (and most times hustling) cities, and, of course, sand and sun can be a little overwhelming for the independent backpacker. Here are three ideas - one a place, one a site, and one an activity - to get you started.

Aswan
Aswan is one of Egypt's southernmost cities, prized for both its sunny resort climate and relatively safe and laid-back atmosphere. After Cairo or Alexandria, the smaller, more intimate feel and navigable streets of Aswan are welcoming to in ...

Egypt & Jordan with Imaginative Traveller: Part II, Egypt - Jordan

Egypt and Jordan
By Sylvia Seschel

After two days in hustle and bustle Cairo, we headed toward Mt. Sinai (where Moses received the Ten Commandments) via the Suez Canal with five new people in our group. We barely saw the freighters leaving in the distant haze.

Instead of 2 a.m. wake up call to see the sunrise at Mt. Sinai, everyone agreed to see the sunset the night before. A Bedouin guide led the way. Thinking I am in the best shape of my life, I knew the climbing and fresh air is a huge difference than my normal gym workout.

Two people changed their minds half way up an ...

Egypt
By Sylvia Seschel

The plane landed in Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport. I looked at my watch. This was going to be close. It wasn’t the first time I felt like I was on The Amazing Race. Taking a bus from Terminal 2F to 2E, I thought I was home free until I followed the sign to gate 82. Oh no, I’m not there yet! On another bus again, I had a moments panic and had to ask “Am I on the right bus?” The driver nodded. Whew! I’m at the gate with half an hour to spare. I was on my way to Cairo.

The next night I met 14 others ...

Dry And Hot In Morocco

Morocco
By Michael Tilley

"Nighty night," with that, my roommate inserts his orange ear-plugs, dons his night shade, hops into bed and promptly starts snoring. At 9:30 I think that is just a bit too early to go to sleep, unless you're 6, while he's more like 60. So I'm left feeling guilty having the light on to read my paperback or else having to find somewhere else in the hotel where it's both warm and light enough for me. That's one of the problems of an Explore holiday, no matter where you go in the world (though there's now the option to book a single room on most trips). Apart fro ...
