Itinerary

Day 1 Lima

Take in the sights of Lima's historic centre on an orientation tour and maybe descend into the eerie underground catacombs at the 16th century monastery of San Francisco.

Days 2-3 Amazon Jungle

Birdwatching opportunities abound in the lush Amazon. Explore the jungle with local guides, learning about the exotic plants and animals in the area. Spot an ocelot or jabiru, perhaps. The wonderful lodge here is comfortable and eco-friendly.

Day 4 Cuzco

History is alive in Cuzco. The stone walled city streets date from Inca times and the colonial buildings from the Spanish era.

Day 5 Sacred Valley

Call in at Pisac, famed for its artisan market, and see ancient ruins on a journey through this agricultural region where maize is the main crop.

Days 6-9 Inca Trail

Limber up for the trek of a lifetime. The Inca Trail is long, arduous and challenging, but the fascinating route passes across high plateaus, past ancient ruins and through verdant cloud-forests. Be richly rewarded with views of Machu Picchu and the chance to explore these incredible ruins.

Day 10 Cuzco

Spend a lazy day relaxing in a cafe or head over to the central market to browse the stalls alongside the Quechua-speaking descendents of the Incas.

Days 11-12 Puno/Lake Titicaca

Cruise the massive inland sea of Lake Titicaca and learn about the unique cultures of the many islands on a local homestay visit.

Days 13-15 La Paz

Stop in at Copacabana, home to a Moorish-style cathedral that contains a miracle-working Dark Virgin of the Lake, one of the patron saints of Bolivia. Then head to La Paz, which feels like it's at the top of the world.

Days 16-17 Sucre

Spend time in Bolivia's official capital, taking in the whitewashed colonial buildings or seeking out one of the beautiful weavings the indigenous people of the region are renowned for.

Days 18-19 Potosi

It's possible to explore the mines of Potosi, a sometimes uncomfortable trip that is nonetheless an incredibly eye-opening experience.

Days 20-23 Salar de Uyuni

Explore the strange and stunning landscapes of southern Bolivia by 4WD, discovering salt plains, volcanoes and geysers along the way.

Days 24-25 La Paz

Explore exciting La Paz with its lively nightlife and many markets.
