Itinerary

Days 1-2 Cuzco

Arrive in Cuzco ready for adventure. This region is South America's oldest city and was home to the Incas for two centuries, before the Spanish built their first capital here. Uncover Inca history in the many ancient sites that dot the city, and soak up a bit of Spanish colonial culture as well. There are several great museums to explore and the cathedral, built on top of an Inca palace, is well worth a visit to see its gold-covered altar and great collection of local art. If adventure calls, head out of town on a biking or rafting journey.

Days 3-4 Sacred Valley/Aguas Calientes

Join a day excursion to the lush and fertile Sacred Valley, dotted with archaeological sites, strategic fortresses, charming villages and Peru's ubiquitous llamas. Spend the night in Ollantaytambo, one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. A train ride through the winding Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes is a great opportunity to see more of Peru's fabulous scenery.

Day 5 Machu Picchu/Cuzco

That first glimpse of the famed ruins and their backdrop of forested mountains is an unforgettable experience. While it's thought that Machu Picchu was built in around 1440 as a country retreat for Incan nobility, evidence suggests that this had been a sacred site for much longer. Be transported back in time on a guided tour of the ruins. Return to Cuzco by train later in the day.

Day 6 Cuzco

Enjoy a free morning exploring the sites of Cuzco, or take the time to try some highland cuisine, which is formed around the staples of corn and potatoes. For a real culinary quest, seek out cuy - guinea pig - a delicacy in this area.
