Southern Tuscany - 8 or 5 days Self Guided Cycle

Trip Image This trip takes you south-east of Siena, a part of Tuscany which even today has escaped the interests of most tourists. The path is a fascinating progression across open rolling hills, a great wealth of different landscapes, remote medieval villages and walled towns. Southern Tuscany is delightfully sleepy, and you'll fall in love with the scenery, serenity and freedom on this journey of discovery.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Siena to Buonconvento

The route starts in the beautiful medieval city of Siena. Justifiably renowned for its art and architecture as well as its magnificent food and wines, Siena gives you a real feel for life in days gone by. The vibrant local culture lives on today, as demonstrated by the world-famous spectacle of the Palio.

Days 3-4 Buonconvento to Montalcino

Cycle to the famous Benedictine abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, with manificent views of the surrounding hills en route. The route then travels through the Brunello vineyards up to MontalcinoYou are then rewarded with a rest day in the classic Tuscan hilltop town of Montalcino, the home of the magnificent wine Brunello di Montalcino. Wine-tasting is of course an option, and we also provide details of a most rewarding optional walk or cycle to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo where the monks still conduct services in Gregorian chant.

Day 5 Montalcino to Bagno Vignoni

Cycle through farmland and vineyards and then through shady woods to the truly remarkable village of Bagno Vignoni. Hardly known to foreign tourists, this village is today one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets. In Roman times, however, it was a popular holiday spot; both for the curative properties of its natural spring waters and for the lovely surroundings.

Day 6 Bagno Vignoni to Pienza

Today's ride goes through the town of San Quirico d'Orcia and out into the rolling hills, with beautiful views all round. Then it's up to the immaculate medieval planned town of Pienza.

Days 7-8 Pienza to Montepulciano

The final day's ride takes you through magnificent hilly scenery, past the beautiful village of Montichiello and on through fields and vineyards up to Montepulciano - one of Tuscany's most treasured and evocative medieval hill towns.
