Itinerary

Day 1 Quito/Tinalandia

Private transfer from Quito to Tinalandia Ecolodge. Free afternoon to explore this cloud forest preserve.

Day 2 Tinalandia

Spend your time here at leisure. Tinalandia is a premier location for bird watching with over 350 different species. Optional activities include hiking, horseback riding, golf and swimming.A unique ecolodge in the cloud forests of Ecuador, Tinalandia rests on the Western slope of the Andes, at the southern end of the Choco bio-region. At an ideal altitude of 2,000 feet above sea level, Tinalandia is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.Located only two and a half hours from Quito, Tinalandia is one of the most easily-accessed wildlife preserves from Ecuador's capital.Tinalandia has two main lodging facilities: on the lower bank are the reception area and dining hall; the other on the upper bank hosts the main guest rooms and a recreation hall. Next to the upper cabins is our 9-hole golf course which provides ample opportunities for butterfly-watching, as well as seeking birds that prefer open spaces and forest edges. The 16 rooms, each with their own unique style, accommodate 41 guests and give Tinalandia an aristocratic character and charm. The recreation hall is formed of an enormous interwoven network of "hard as stone" wooden floorboards. Card tables, several sofas and hammocks provide rest and relaxation after a long day of observation and adventure. A spectacular view from the screened windows spanning the length of the wall reveals the splendor of Tinalandia's location. For those who choose to spend the night listening to the nocturnal symphony of birds and insects, an old-world patio grants you an extended vista over the valley of the river Toachi.Designed in the 1950's, Tinalandia offers a perfect synthesis of nature and civilization - amazing vistas, clean rooms, private baths with hot water showers, and 24-hour electricity (supplemented by the owner's own hydro-electric system) make this natural reserve as modern and comfortable as it is natural. The meals at Tinalandia are wholesome, home-cooked, delicious dishes. Most of the fruits are collected from Tinalandia's own gardens - we harvest only that which is necessary and leave the rest to drop to the ground for the birds and insects of the region. Most vegetables are bought in Quito from a hydroponic and organic French farm. A typical meal consists of soup, potatoes or rice, vegetables, and meat or fish. Optional activities:Tinalandia is considered to be a premiere location for bird watching in Ecuador due to its outstanding biodiversity and proximity to Quito. Located on the western slope of the Andes Mountain Range, botanists and ornithologists consider this to be the most bio-diverse region in the world. A simple morning walk among the grounds of Tinalandia brings you in contact with flocking groups of up to 15 toucans — often for visitors that are not even out birding. A short trek from the lodge brings you to the edge of the primary rainforest, spanning over 60 acres. Three trails offer 1 to 4 hour hikes on cascading hillsides with a whitewater stream of rocks and boulders to challenge ultimate sport enthusiasts. The highlands of Tinalandia offer a panoramic view of the rainforest canopy, something so often missed on Amazon tours that stay at ground level. Being eye to eye with the rainforest canopy, these hikes give you the opportunity to face the birds inhabiting the forest from a new perspective. The furthest trek takes you on foot to one of the world's few remaining moss forests.Horseback riding is a great way to see Tinalandia, and the owner would be glad to bring out the horses from the stable for one to two hour rides around the reserve. Also available at Tinalandia is a spectacular class III river-rafting ride down the Toachi River. A well-equipped US tour operator in the area can easily arrange all that you would need to brave these rapids.A short swim after a day's trek makes for a great way to relax. The pool affords a great view of the nearby river and valley.

Day 3 Tinalandia/Quito

Spend the morning at leisure with a myriad of iutdoor activites to choose from. Afternoon transfer back to Quito.
