Life is rarely black and white ? unless you?re a Giant Panda on the brink of extinction. With a total world population of 1,000, 270 of which are in the Shaanxi reserves, there are certainly no grey areas up for discussion. Volunteers who have had their eye on this line of conservation work can now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal to these living fossils and ?panda? to their every need. Based in majestic surroundings at the foot of the Qingling mountains, volunteers will also have the chance to work with fascinating species indigenous to China such as the Golden Monkey, Crested Ibis and the sheep-like Takin. Volunteers will be involved with shedding some light on the plight of all these creatures by developing literature, programmes of activities, teaching resources and internet/email facilities.

Activities We have a programme of activities that you will be able to choose to ensure that you get the most from your placement. This has been developed by previous volunteers working together with the staff at the centre and the in country co-ordinator to maximise your experience and learning opportunities. You will be able to specify which animals in particular you want to work with. The main activities will include:- Cleaning animal enclosures and waterholes. This allows you to get up close and personal with the wide variety of animals at the centre. As well as a number of endangered species there are other animals, including black deer, lesser pandas (red pandas), monkeys, peacocks as well as other animals.- Feeding the animals and observing their behaviour during feeding and cleaning times.- General maintenance activities at the park, including plant control and fencing.- Helping local staff to develop their conversational English. - There may, during your placement, be the opportunity to company the centre staff on rescue outings. This involves going into the local mountain area.- You can also become involved in research activities on the animals in the park, particularly the Pandas. You should note though that this is usually done around the mating/breeding times of the year, i.e. March/April and August.- There is also the opportunity to teach some English phrases at the local Lou Guantai School - nursery rhymes and basic English phrases are particularly popular. The staff at the centre will organise a trip into the mountains either by foot or on horse, weather permitting. Basic Chinese lessons can be arranged for you if required.
Schedule The park is open from 8am until 6pm and you can expect to work 6-8 hours a day, five days per week. A volunteer's working hours will depend on which activities you choose, most cleaning and feeding activities start at 8am and some are repeated in the afternoon. You may choose just to concentrate on one animal, the Panda for example, or you can do more.
Resources The placement will aim to provide any materials or equipment such as boots, gloves and overcoats. However, shoe sizes differ so you may prefer to bring your own wellington boots and gloves. Wellington boots are essential for when it's raining.Special Points: Take old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty - comfortable khaki is preferable. Comfortable hiking shoes are essential. Bring a hat in the summer as the sun is extremely strong and hot.
Requirements CV requried for confirmation from the project.Minimum age for this project is 21.
