Itinerary

Day 1 Morgan's Rock

Arrive Morgan’s Rock, check-in then take in the beautiful surroundings of this unique Hacienda and Ecolodge. Morgan’s Rock is located near the town of San Juan del Sur, which lies just north of Guanacaste, south of the colonial city of Granada and about two hours from the city of Managua (Nicaragua's capital). Morgan’s Rock is the ideal extension to your vacation in Costa Rica since it can be easily reached by air or ground transport. The hacienda is located within driving distance from southern Nicaragua's most prominent tourist attractions: the colonial town of Granada, los Pueblos Blancos handcrafts market, the Masaya Volcano National Park, Lake Nicaragua and the unique Ometepe Island boasting two volcanoes on one island. The hacienda and private nature reserve offers an abundance of different trees, plants, birds, insects and mammals. All of the guided tours support local community members and help the conservation of the forest and the acquisition of more land to be conserved and reforested. Your interest in Nicaragua’s nature and culture as well as the reforestation and organic agriculture at the Hacienda help to spread the word about sustainable development and train more locals. There are a variety of nature tours exploring the Hacienda’s different ecosystems, hardwood plantations, untouched beaches, hills overlooking volcanoes, Lake Nicaragua, the Pacific Ocean, and agro tourism based tours where you can learn about reforestation, life in a hacienda or a traditional sugar mill. Furthermore, a day trip to nearby Granada, active volcanoes and artisan villages is highly recommended, should time permit.Morgan’s Rock Hacienda & Eco Lodge is part of a 1,000-hectare tree farming and reforestation project as well as an 800-hectare private nature reserve which is actually one of the last, large natural sanctuaries along the Pacific Coast of Central America. The conservation of this area is crucial for maintaining the habitat of animals living in this region. During the past five years, almost 1.5 million trees (both hardwood and fruit), have been planted in these lands, to avoid deforestation of primary forest by providing the world market with certified woods, and at the same time hoping to return some of them back to the ecosystem they once used to be. These reforested lands, together with the nature reserve and the estuary, host a variety of forest animals such as howler monkeys, sloths, white tipped deer and many birds native to the subtropical region. The beach is also a nesting ground for giant sea turtles. This entire property is yours to enjoy and explore with our guides.Surrounded by NatureSince we have nestled ourselves into the surroundings of nature, and are consequently, renting space amongst the wildlife, we need to remind ourselves daily that we are the visitors in this animal kingdom. Though we cannot guarantee that you will be seeing all of the animals found at Morgan’s Rock, you will surely come across some interesting species during your stay. Along with the “cute” animals, come the insects, some small and some larger. Spiders are abundant and they weave their webs at the speed of light. None of the spiders are venomous even though they may sometimes appear to be. Tolerance of this ever present animal population is a necessary compromise in order to enjoy it here. The fifteen bungalows face west; most of them letting you revere dramatic sunsets. The surrounding forest adds indispensable privacy and peace to each unit. Most bungalows sit on a cliff overlooking the private bay and estuary. While they have been soundly designed to offer shelter from rain, sun or wind, each bungalow breathes nature. Some even have a tree growing out through the roof and all enjoy an indoor beach garden hosting your own private outdoor shower. All hotel bungalows feature one king size bed, a comfortable sofa bed and a private deck. The architect has carefully used mainly local materials and the wooden furniture was custom made by local artisans. Even the quaint lamps have been made out of recycled wood from a former cattle ranch at Morgan’s Rock Eco Lodge! The bungalows are connected to the main lodge by an awesome 110-meter suspension bridge crossing a forested canyon.
