Itinerary

Day 1 San José / Pacuare Lodge

Pick up by your guide from your hotel by 7am. Hit the road to the Pacuare River, stopping on the way for an authentic Costa Rican breakfast. After arriving at the river, expert guides explain safety precautions and provide you with gear before the hour and a half raft though scenic canyons and dense jungle. Disembark at the indigenous-style facilities of Pacuare Lodge, with time to dry off before lunch is served. Spend the afternoon relaxing or take a guided hike through the Pacuare Protected Zone, followed by a three-course candlelight dinner.Tucked away inside the Pacuare protected zone, on the banks of this enchanting river, Pacuare Lodge's grounds are completely surrounded by tropical rainforest, with enormous trees and wildlife on all sides. The Pacuare Protected Zone covers over 25,000 acres as it descends down the Talamanca Mountain Range; researchers estimate that about 350 tree species grow in this rainforest preserve. Pacuare Lodge was designed and constructed to blend with the surrounding environment for minimal impact; it has been recognized by the World Tourism Organization as one of only sixty-five examples throughout the world that have attained this level of good practice in sustainability and ecotourism. Lanterns and candles provide light, as there is no electricity at the lodge. No trees were cut to build the bungalows or main lodge. Lumber was purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by small farmers. Roofs are made from palm leaves installed by Cabecar Indians living in the area using their traditional style. Near the lodge we have purchased nearly 30 hectares of primary rainforest that was in danger of being cleared. Because our goal is to preserve this untouched virgin forest, no visitors are allowed in this area. The two-story eco-lodge has a comfortable, rustic dining area on the first floor, and an open-air lounge on the second floor with sitting areas and hammocks. Guest rooms are modern wooden bungalows with thatched palm roofs, carefully designed in an indigenous style to blend into the surrounding forest. Each bungalow comes complete with private bathroom and shower…but don’t expect hot water or electricity!

Day 2 Pacuare Lodge

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle. Enjoy a hearty buffet breakfast before two hours in the treetops with Pacuare Zone’s original Canopy Tour. After a safety orientation and donning your specialized equipment, hike twenty minutes through Pacuare Lodge’s private reserve to the first platform. Experience the exotic beauty of the rainforest from a bird's-eye view, rappel down towering trees and slide along cables from tree to tree. Descend the jungle-cloaked mountain toward the lodge, finishing with a final rappel that leaves you just steps away from our main lodge! In the afternoon relax in a hammock or walk through the jungle to nearby waterfalls.

Day 3 Pacuare Lodge / San José

After breakfast launch the rafts to start your trip back to San José. Today raft 13 miles of Class III rapids, all the while surrounded by spectacular scenery. Stop to explore side streams, waterfalls and pools; a picnic lunch will be served on an overturned raft on the water’s edge. Arrive at the river take-out and change into dry clothes at our private facilities before returning to San José.
