Itinerary

Day 1 Playa del Carmen

Snorkel among the mangroves and get a taste for refreshing margaritas. It's possible to take a trip to infamous Cancun and frolic in the surf or hit the many bars.

Days 2-3 Tulum

Travel to the city of Tulum. This city was at its height during the 13th-15th century and is thus one of the later Mayan outposts.

Days 4-5 Caye Caulker

Lie on the beach, go for a swim or stroll around the sandy island. There's an opportunity to go manatee (sea cow) spotting and take in these huge, curious creatures.

Days 6-7 San Ignacio

Tucked between forested hills and gushing rivers, optional activities abound - wander through the butterfly garden or canoe through limestone caves.

Days 8-9 Flores/Tikal

In this island town, many locals still get about by canoe. Why not visit Tikal to explore the maze of structures scattered through the jungle? Those feeling fit can clamber up the world's highest Mayan structure.

Days 10-11 Rio Dulce

Travel through the dense jungle of the Peten to Rio Dulce. Perhaps take a lancha up the river to visit nearby hot springs, a rubber plantation and an old Spanish fort.

Day 12 Antigua

Discover this city's charms by strolling around the little streets.

Days 13-14 San Jorge/Chichicastenango

Travel to San Jorge, near Panajachel where a local family will host you for the next 2 nights. Hone those bargaining skills at the famous markets of Chichicastenango, filled with colourful handicrafts and medicinal plants.

Days 15-17 Antigua

Fuelled by a cup of Guatemalan coffee, take to Antigua's World Heritage-listed streets to explore the beautiful colonial buildings, set against a backdrop of volcanoes. In the late afternoon, hang out with the locals in Central Park and reflect on a great adventure.
