Day 1 Hanoi

Hop onto a cyclo to discover Hanoi's unique blend of lakes, boulevards and bustling streetside markets.

Day 2 Vinh

Shaking off a long history of war, Vinh is emerging as a very pleasant place to stop before crossing the border.

Days 3-4 Vientiane

Check out Pha That Luang, Laos' most important national monument, or trade smiles with vendors at the colourful Talat Sao market.

Days 5-7 Vang Vieng

Explore limestone caves, float downriver in an inner tube, sample some fried bats or just take it easy in this laid-back riverside paradise.

Days 8-10 Luang Prabang

Visit the fascinating Royal Palace Museum for an insight into Lao's imperial past. Take a dip at Kuang Si Falls or climb Mt Phou Si for fantastic views.

Day 11 Pak Beng/Mekong River

Unwind on the slow boat up the Mekong River to the Thai border, enjoying breathtaking scenery and idyllic village scenes along the way.

Day 12 Huay Xai/Mekong River

Visit a nearby hilltribe village or veg out with a fresh fish dish in this frontier town.

Days 13-14 Chiang Mai

Mystical yet modern, Chiang Mai is a charming town to spend a few days. Discover hidden temples in the Old Quarter or hire a bicycle to cruise around town.

Days 15-17 Hilltribe Trek

Head to the hills, hiking through the rural villages of Thailand's northern hilltribes. Meeting smiling locals in distinctive traditional dress and sleeping in bamboo huts make this leg of the trip an absolute highlight.

Day 18 Chiang Mai/Overnight Train

Treat yourself to a relaxing Thai massage.

Day 19 Bangkok

Hit the streets for a taste of Thailand, feasting on pad thai and Chang beer.
