Itinerary

Days 1-2 Broome/Cape Leveque

From Broome, see the impressive mother-of-pearl Beagle Bay church altar reveal the missionary history of the Dampier Peninsula, where Indigenous communities continue their traditions amid wild, spectacular landscapes. Meander through Bardi saltwater country in search of bush tucker as a local guide shares Dreamtime legends. Tuck into freshly brewed billy tea and campfire-cooked damper then take to the dusty red track to reach Cape Leveque in time for a hearty barbecue dinner. Be soothed to sleep by Indian Ocean waves. Next day, feel free to enjoy the Cape's rugged coastline. Join a snorkelling or fishing adventure or steer a sea kayak or dinghy. Splurge on a scenic flight for an exhilarating view of the archipelago or just lounge on a soft, sandy beach. After a barbecue dinner, sleep out under the vast Kimberley sky.

Day 3 One Arm Point/Broome

Witness the phenomenon of huge tidal flows in the Buccaneer Archipelago. These tranquil coral lagoons also house the buccaneers of the animal kingdom: saltwater crocodiles, sharks and sea snakes. See where barramundi, pearl and trochus shell species are nurtured at the Aquaculture Hatchery, then enjoy lunch at the Lombadina community before making tracks to Broome.

Day 4 Windjana Gorge/Fitzroy Crossing

The rough Gibb River Road leads past Derby to the stunning Napier Ranges, where a huge hollow boab tree was reputedly used as an impromptu prison. Millions of years ago these mountains formed a reef; now the 90 m-high Windjana Gorge teems with freshwater crocodiles, birds and bush tucker. Explore Tunnel Creek's caves and stalactites and cool off in a waterhole. Camp by the remote Fitzroy River near the small town of Fitzroy Crossing.

Days 5-6 Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Ranges)

Be astonished by the huge China Wall quartz vein in the former gold rush town of Halls Creek. Explore the Bungle Bungle Ranges' striped 'beehive' domes that took 20 million years to form. Splash out on a scenic flight for a bird's eye view of the area or just settle into this extraordinary land with a glass of wine and a night under the stars. Rise early to marvel at Echidna Chasm's towering palm trees, walk to Cathedral Gorge and act natural in its rocky amphitheatre. After a cool waterfall shower, enjoy a leisurely campfire dinner on the last night in Purnululu National Park.

Day 7 Geikie Gorge/Broome

Picnic in Geikie Gorge before a park ranger heads a river cruise. Gliding through the gorge spotting crocodiles, birds and fish is a great way to cap off a wondrous week, before heading back to Broome.
