Classic Polar Bear Expedition

Trip Image This Polar Bear adventure offers just the right amount of time with bears – two daylong outings and one evening journey! During the daytime, young males play fight, mother bears explore with their cubs at their sides, and solitary adults lumber across the tundra. And, at night, the tundra provides an eerie and remote escapade, and a possible chance to witness the remarkable aurora borealis – the northern lights. Our friend, Gretchen Berg, has been on this adventure. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Winnipeg

Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel where you gather for an informal dinner orientation at 7:00 pm. D

Day 2: Winnipeg to Churchill

This morning, fly to Churchill. Enjoy an evening presentation on polar bears and the northern environs presented by our professional staff of naturalists and scientists. B,L,D

Days 3-4: Bear Viewing

These days will be spent exploring the tundra on your Polar Buggies where you will view bears and other wildlife. You travel outside of town by bus and meet your vehicles at a special boarding site. Here, our Expedition Leader will begin his/her nature interpretation, telling you all about how polar bears thrive in such a harsh environment. From the warmth and comfort of our vehicle (we only take 15 travelers in vehicles that can accommodate on average 30 travelers, allowing plenty of room for a window seat and to store your gear), we may see mothers and cubs as well as young adult males playfighting. The interaction of these animals is fascinating and our leader will make sure that we see as much as we can. On one of these days, we may schedule our tundra vehicle for either early morning or the afternoon with plans to catch the sunrise or sunset, spending the other portion of the day visiting the famed sled dogs or exploring the rocky coast by foot. In the evenings, we gather for a well-deserved meal before our leaders provide an evening presentation on wildlife or local cultures. B,L,D

Day 5: Evening on Tundra

Take a full-day tour of historic Churchill and then head out to the tundra in the evening for nighttime bear viewing and dinner on the vehicle. During your daytime exploration, you may have the opportunity to travel to Cape Merry where Arctic fox and Arctic hare tend to appear as well as to the local sled dogs, should you miss them previously on the trip. Your nighttime tundra excursion provides one of the most exhilarating travel experiences possible -- a rare chance to view the northern lights away from the glare of town. Amidst the seclusion and darkness of the sub-arctic tundra, the lights begin as white streaks across the northern sky, then begin to dance and flicker in myriad of colors, creating a captivating natural light show. You return late in the evening having experienced the true north! B,L,D

Day 6: Churchill to Winnipeg

Your return flights are scheduled, weather permitting, to depart in the mid to late afternoon to give you as much time as possible to explore this remote and intriguing town, pick up last-minute crafts and souvenirs, and, time permitting, to participate in an optional helicopter journey over the tundra or an authentic dog sledding excursion. Transfer to the airport for our flight back to Winnipeg. B,L/D

Day 7: Return Home

After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your return flight. B
