Kenya (MAD) Project - 14 days

Trip Image If you've ever wanted to teach adorable kids and contribute to community projects in a rural Kenyan village, this 14-day project offers a unique and unmissable experience. Primary schools in Kenya are overcrowded and lack government funding to add new classrooms and facilities... that's where you come in. Stay in a local home, experiencing daily village life, and split your time between a community building project and teaching at a local school. Working alongside local builders and spending time with the kids, you'll discover a valuable sense of community and get the satisfaction of knowing that your travel can really make a difference to a Kenyan community.

Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi

Get acquainted with this bustling city, the largest between Cape Town and Cairo and perhaps learn a little of the country's impressive history with a visit to the ornate National Museum.

Days 2-13 Teaching & Building

Swap the busy city streets for country roads, passing stunning Rift Valley scenery of escarpments, extinct volcanoes and beautiful Lake Naivasha. Be welcomed to Gilgil by representatives of the local Kikuyu community and settle into home for the next fortnight, in a village on the outskirts of the town. Accommodation will be basic, with bracing bucket showers, bedrooms shared with fellow volunteers and sporadic electricity (or none at all). But that's all part of the adventure - look forward to cosy evenings swapping stories with fellow team members by the light of paraffin lamps. Explore the village, visit the building site, see the school and take a photo of the building project - it will soon look very different. Get into the swing of a daily routine dividing time between building and teaching and get to know the village, the locals and fellow team members more as each day passes - perhaps over a mid-morning cup of African tea. It's not all work - there's plenty of free time for leisurely walks through the countryside, playing football with the kids and getting to know their parents. The Kikuyu community speak some English, but they'll be more than happy to teach some words of their local language and perhaps even share some other skills from dancing to weaving.

Day 14 Nairobi

Sadly, it's time to say goodbye to new friends and return to Nairobi. But leave with the satisfaction of seeing the tangible difference this unique fortnight has made to the local community.
