Itinerary

Days 1-4 Beijing

Discover this seething, fascinating city then head out of town to trek along the Great Wall - a lifetime 'must-do'.

Days 5-7 Zhongwei/Yellow River

A trip down the Yellow River on sheepskin rafts is highly recommended. Board a 'ship of the desert' for an overnight camel safari into the stark Tengger Desert.

Days 8-10 Xi'an

Once the imperial capital of China, Xi'an boasts a majestic Ming dynasty wall and a number of stunning pagodas. A day trip out to see the Terracotta Warriors is highly recommended.

Days 11-13 Chengdu

Sichuan hotpots, traditional teahouses, giant pandas and locals out walking their songbirds - Chengdu literally bursts with delights. Experience the bustle, taste the spicy snacks and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

Days 14-15 Kunming

The capital of the Yunnan province offers a medley of tastes, sights and architectural features. Browse the Flower and Bird Market or get lost in the backstreets.

Day 16 Jinghong

Sprawled along the Mekong River, Jinghong is easy to explore on foot or by bike. Head to the night market and choose dinner from one of the smoking stalls.

Days 17-18 Village Trek

Trek through hilltribe villages, each with their own language, dress and culture. Experience this rural lifestyle while staying in a traditional residence.

Day 19 Jinghong

Begin the trek back. Stop to cool off beneath a waterfall and have lunch at a minority settlement.

Days 20-21 Luang Nam Tha

Cross the border into Laos and, after a long day of travelling, relax in peaceful Luang Nam Tha. Take the opportunity to explore the surrounding patchwork of rice paddies.

Days 22-24 Luang Prabang

Take advantage of free time to experience the Luang Prabang's magical atmosphere. Wake up early to offer alms to the monks, discover fine local textiles and admire the French-colonial architecture.

Days 25-26 Vang Vieng

Limestone karsts dot the landscape, local markets overflow with produce and deep caves await exploration - discover the delights of Vang Vieng.

Days 27-28 Vientiane

One of the world's sleepiest capitals, Vientiane offers a wealth of cultural and epicurean delights. Meet locals at the colourful morning market and watch the sunset gild the Mekong with gold.

Day 29 Bangkok

The adventure concludes in this chaotic, compelling metropolis. Perhaps stay a few days extra to see it all.
