The mountains and wadis of the Jabal al Akhdar offer spectaular views and fascinating villages to explore. We travel through the mountains, passing the dramatic craggy peaks of the highest mountain range in Oman. For thousands of years self-sufficient oases have flourished in the folds of rocks, using an ancient irrigation system known as falaj. Peer down the drop of 1000m to the bottom of Wadi Ghul, known locally as the ‘Grand Canyon’ - at the bottom of this vast void, the wadi winds peacefully through the landscape. Stop at the eerie ruined village of Tanuf, destroyed during the Jabel wars of the 1950s. Explore the oasis of Nizwa, visiting the traditional goat market and modern souk; traders bring their goats from around the surrounding area in a timeless tradition, offering a unique insight into traditional Omani life.Day 5 Muscat to Dhofar
Return to Muscat for the short flight to Salalah, capital of Oman's historic southern province of Dhofar.Days 6-7 Salalah
Since ancient times Dhofar has been known as the land of frankincense. Backed by the mountains of the Jabal al Qara and fronted by the Arabian Sea, Salalah is center of a fascinating region of scenic and historic sights. Visit Job's tomb - Al Mughsayl, where geysers spout 30 feet into the air - Mirbat, a fortified town renowned for its Arabian horses .. beaches, birdsanctuaries, archaeological sites, souks and incense grove .. the options are endless.Days 8-9 Empty Quarter to the Arabian Sea
An incredible drive skirting the southern fringes of the great Rub al Khali desert. Stop to visit the remains of Ubar - the famed Atlantis of the Sands - ancient frankincense trading center and legendary city of Arabian literature. We will also pass through the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary as we head towards the coast.Day 10 Wahiba Sands
Drive deep into the heart of the shifting sands of Wahiba. Laid out before us like a great ocean of sand the endless dunes, some rising to 100 metres in height, are generally rusty red at the base and honey coloured on the top – an alluring landscape of changing contours and colours. Be on the look out for Bedouins who roam the land with goats and camels. Tonight we enjoy Omani hospitality and another night under a desert sky full of stars.Day 11 Sur
Head back out of the sands to Sur. With its deep, protected harbour Sur was the country's premier dhow building port. Dhows were used throughout the 19th century and are still being built here - where we visit the shipyards.Day 12 Wadi Shab & Finns Beach
Follow the rugged coastline to Wadi Shab, a lush canyon oasis nestled amongst barren mountains. Relax in the freshwater pools, or take a stroll through the dense vegetation and plam trees, before heading to our camp at Finns Beach.
