This tour has it all and will leave a deep impression. It manages to encapsulate Southern India in a way that is impossible to do by yourself. We cruise by houseboat on the Malabar backwaters - a network of waterways, to discover how the communities of the region live. We also visit the thriving and colourful temple complexes in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu.Beginning in Chennai we drive to the Frenchcolonial town of Pondicherry via the Mahabalipuram Temples and visit Auroville Ashram. We continue south to Tiruchirapalli otherwise known as Trichy, visiting Chidambaram and Gangaikondacholapuram on the way, as well as the temples and palaces of Tanjore, and exploring the Rock Fort and Srinrangam Temple in Trichy.Our next stop is Madurai and a visit to the mightyMeenakshi Temple where thousands of Hindusworship daily. Another highlight of this area is aride on the lake at Periyar National Park whereyou might see elephants, bison and spotted deer.Next we travel to Kumarakom in the heart of the Backwater Country, and from there we cruise to Alleppey on a traditional Kerala rice boat, fully equipped with bedrooms, toilet and kitchen, staying overnight on board. As we watch local life sail by and experience the fascinating world of rice boats, we sample the delicious South Indian cuisine. There is also the opportunity to canoe on the backwaters.Our final stop is Cochin, where we make a visit to Fort Cochin, Mattancherry Palace, the Jewish Synagogue and Chinese Fishing Nets.Christmas and New Year supplements apply to tours departing during this season.
