Maharani Vegetarian Restaurant 267 Long Street (021) 24 2917 A wheat-grass extravaganza! Beautiful vegetarian Indian food. Platter of all dishes on menu for 2 people is R49. Good value.

Kaapse Tafel Restaurant 90 Queen Street (021) 23 1651 More up-market. Main courses R30-R40. A wonderful menu of Cape Malay classics and super wines.

Africa Café 213 Lower Main Street, Observatory (021) 447 9553 R70 pp for a set menu of about 10 traditional dishes from all over Africa. Most dishes are vegetarian.

Serendipity 236 Long Street (021) 424 8796 Lovely Italian food in a supern rose petal ambience.
