Air

In the past two airlines, Ansett and Qantas, have monopolised air activity between Australian states. However, there are plans to introduce new airlines in Australia which will hopefully bring the cost of flying down.

Sydney to Melbourne is one of the most popular routes in the world, which is why Virgin and a couple of other new airlines are now expressing interest in servicing the route. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is currently assessing whether Virgin and another new airline, Impulse, can be granted permission to fly. If all goes well:

  • Impulse is offering a flat $139 one way.
  • Virgin is promising less than $100 each way between Melbourne and Sydney for 50% of flights.

    Bus

  • Greyhound - Can book online.
  • McCaffertys - Has discounts for international travellers who buy travel passes before arriving in Australia.

    Train

  • V/Line - Connects Melbourne to the rest of Victoria as well as interstate.
