Sand Castle Contest
February 4th

![]()
These things are amazing, if you’re gonna be in town go check this out. Be careful where you walk! This thing is organized by Bert Adams, aka Betto. Hailing from Vancouver, Wash. Betto travels the world organizing sand castle contests, exhibitions, training, and workshops.
Nice job if you can get it! “And what do you do for a living Sir?”
“I’m a Sand Castle Contractor.”
Betto’s usually around Mazatlan for the month of January where he gives free lessons on the beach (where else?) every Sunday from 9am to 5pm. You can find him out behind the Doubletree Hotel. The contest this year will be held on the weekend of Feb. 4, again on the beach behind the Doubletree Hotel.
On Saturday, Feb. 3rd, Betto will be out there from 8am to 5pm (regular hours, I like this guy) to teach sand castle sculpture classes and show off some of his work and the work of others. Sunday is the open contest, anybody can enter. Last year I made a litter box. Nobody noticed. The contest runs from 10am to 3pm.
NOTE: This thing packs them in so if ya wanna see the action, get there early.
Carnaval
February 22 – 27
MAJOR PARTY!!!! And I mean major! This is the third largest festival in the world behind Rio and Mardi Gras. This thing brings them out of the hills by the millions. Ladies be warned, major butt pinchin’ goes on here. It’s like collectin’ beads in New Orleans.
A couple of years ago I met some guys that were on a quest. They were hitting all three Carnavals that year. Hope you survived, guys.
The theme this year is “Let the Music Play”, and you can bet your butt it will! Floats, Parades, Pageants, Parties, Food, Fireworks! This is an old tradition dating back as far as 1838, and they are good at it.
WARNING: This thing gets going a week before and lasts until a week after. Feel free to jump in anytime!
