I’m David Bier, and this is my girlfriend, Jenny Goldsmith. This year I was made redundant from my job in the City of London, and we’ve decided to sell the flat, leave our possessions with friends and see what’s out there in Australasia! I’m hoping that when I return to the UK in December 2003, the job market will be more buoyant and I’ll be able to get back to work.

In the meantime we’re looking forward to feeling the sun on our faces, seeing some of those postcard subjects for real, and taking part in some very non-deskbound activities like parachute jumping and Zorbing. Jenny ran the bar at her student union when she was at university, and she’d like to do that sort of work while we’re away. Apparently everyone at the student bar was slightly afraid of her…I’ve got absolutely no comment!

We’ve been together for three years now and living together for two and a half, so we’re not expecting any domestic surprises on this trip…we already know each other’s habits, moods and smells intimately!

Jenny’s been on holiday to various European resorts and once to Canada but hasn’t really done any serious travelling. Apart from a month travelling around Europe’s train network when I was 18, my major source of travel has been those standard two week holidays all office slaves take in the summer. I have done a few trips to New York and even got out to Hong Kong for a business trip once but this trip will definitely be the mack daddy for both of us!
