Kelly Sobczak traded in her mice-infested, overpriced New York City apartment that she shared with a wacky wannabe actress in March 2001 for a trip around the world. (Well, halfway around that is.)
With the mantra of “Thirty is too young to stagnate,” she tearfully quit her job at the French Government Tourist Office, where she was more sad to bid farewell to her six weeks paid vacation and multiple trips to France than to her French colleagues.
It was while strolling the streets of the Upper East Side alone on Valentine’s Day 2000 that she decided she was still going to go to Iran, even though her boss had refused her vacation request, and while she was at it, she might as well travel around the world. And she hasn’t looked back since.
Her travels have thus far taken her to Poland, Hungary, Syria, Yemen (a kick-ass country!), Ethiopia (where she swears she will never return), Sudan, Iran and Pakistan. She plans on continuing her adventures into India and Asia until winter 2002 or until she runs out of money or falls prey to a nasty parasite.
Upon her return to the States, she will head back to her childhood bedroom in Pittsburgh from where she will look for a new job… and start to plan her next trip.
