Neilia Sherman

Neilia with her son, Jonah

Neilia Sherman was born in Toronto and has lived there all of her life. When she was eight years old, she dreamed of being a writer. But she was told that there wasn’t any money in that, so she decided to become a social worker instead. After getting her Master’s Degree in Social Work, she found a job on the psychiatric unit of a hospital. She has also worked as playground supervisor, a switchboard operator, a security guard, a telemarketer and a very bad waitress, among other things. She presently works as a counsellor at a community college, where she writes articles in between her counselling appointments. Her hardest job to date, is raising her two rambunctious boys, ages 8 and 2.

Neilia finally decided that she had something important to say when she was 33 years old and she wrote her first personal essay, which was published in the Toronto Star. Around that time, she also caught the travel bug and has been addicted to writing and travelling ever since. Somehow, she has somehow managed to squeeze in trips to Israel, Jamaica, England, Vancouver, Quebec City, various parts of Florida, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Las Vegas, and New York City as well as numerous one and two night trips to various quaint towns across Ontario. She can’t wait until her little one is toilet trained, so that she can drag the whole family on trips and take a few more on her own (luckily she has a very understanding husband).

Her latest passion is visiting bed and breakfasts, as this is one of the very best ways to really get to know the people and the place that you’re visiting.

To sum it up, when she isn’t travelling, she is fantasizing about her next trip or writing essays and articles, which she’s had published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. Life is fodder for her writing and writing is giving her the life she has always wanted. So if you aren’t happy with what you’re doing, think back to what you wanted to do when you were eight.
