The Chateau Victoria Hotel Restaurants

Talk about having a great view while you eat. Vista 18, the Chateau Victoria’s restaurant on the 18th floor of the hotel cannot be beat for views. The glass extends from ceiling to table height, and, no matter where you sit, you are treated to a panorama of water and city views, Washington State’s Mt. Baker or the distant hills of Vancouver Island.

The menu manages to combine familiar and comfortable favourites with new culinary experiences. I tried one of the house specialties – sweet potato and lotus root chips. They were served with hot spinach and crab dip and were truly delicious. Enough for a meal. I also tried the soup of the day, a chicken curry. Just the right amount of curry made this a taste treat. It was served with homemade tomato herb bread and herbed butter. I topped it off with top quality sinfully delicious chocolate and vanilla ice cream (I happen to be an ice cream nut).

Other items on the menu were equally tempting: scallop spring rolls, seafood croquettes and lettuce wrap. And these were just the appetizers. There are a number of pizzas, pastas, salads and sandwiches to choose from. The grilled sandwiches sound especially appetizing. Next time I’ll try the grilled chicken, borgonzola and roasted walnut. And perhaps top it off with the Obsessive Compulsive – a flourless chocolate torte filled with almonds, pistachios and walnuts and topped with a white chocolate Grand Marnier sauce.

The dinner menu not only features the appetizers, pizzas, pastas and salads from the lunch menu, but you can order, for a main course, local ostrich topped with wild mushrooms and wrapped in puff pastry. Or maybe you’d prefer slow roasted chicken breast finished with a lemon and lavender glaze. Black Velvet Cheesecake – with a roast pecan crust, served with berry coulis and whipped cream – would finish things off nicely.

I am impressed by Vista 18’s extensive wine list by the glass. There’s a lounge area for those who want to have a cocktail and enjoy the view. And part of the restaurant is a separate wing that can be booked for party groups. If you stay in the hotel, this is where you’ll enjoy breakfast.

Victoria Jane's
Victoria Jane’s, on the ground floor, is a lounge with a fireplace in its smaller room. Large, yet intimate, its cozy and comfortable decor is one to relax in over a drink or a bar snack. The usual nachos, wings and chicken fingers are on order along with soups and salads.

I especially like their idea of “create your own sandwich”. You simply tick off on a menu from the choices available – breads, spreads, cheeses, meats, etc. It’s done just to your liking and is big enough to satisfy hearty appetites. It’s a great spot to meet a friend for a drink and a bite to go along with conversation.
