Night and Day – Inisheer, Ireland

Night and Day
Inisheer, Ireland

Part I:

I was surrounded by black. Utter and total darkness. The only light came from thousands of tiny stars in the clear sky. The air was crisp, clean. The only sound was the pounding of the waves on the Cliffs of Moher.

It was the middle of the night on the tiny island of Inisheer, Ireland. I had come to escape the noise and grime of the city, the hordes of people, and the daily stresses of my work life.

I had come for this.

I felt myself slowly relaxing, the tension slowly draining from my body, my shoulders settling into their normal positions.

Black, twinkly lights, the soothing sound of the water.

I made my way to the edge of the property, though I could see nothing. I unlatched the gate, slowly made my way around it, and locked it behind me. Miles of darkness stretched out in front of me. I crept down the steep hill. The grass was wet, slick. I reached out for the mossy stone walls on either side of me. I walked onward and onward, not knowing where I was going and not caring. Freedom, elation, adrenaline rush.

I sat in the grass and let the blackness engulf me.

Yes, this is what I came for.

Part II:

Inisheer Walls

Inisheer Walls

I wake up. The sun is slanting in my window. Right outside are some cows chewing cud. Cows! I get out of bed and look outside of the other picture windows.

Green meadows stretch before me. Gray stone walls circle ’round. I can see potato famine cottages in the distance. Tiny O’Brien’s Castle overlooks its dominion from the hillside above. The Cliffs of Moher are across the bay. Perfect.
