Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Gets a Facelift
Expanded Gallery Shop Re-opens

The proverbial dust has been flying at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in the last two months. The Gallery has installed new flooring, new drywall, and moved walls to renovate six of the current seven exhibition spaces. There is a new entranceway and an expanded Gallery Shop.

These renovations are a part of a year-long plan to upgrade the Art Gallery’s Moss Street structure, which was built in a series of expansions in 1958, 1970 and 1977. The Art Gallery is undergoing these changes now in preparation for the arrival of the Post-Impressionist Masterworks from the National Gallery exhibition in December this year.

While also enhancing the overall aesthetic of the Art Gallery, the renovations to the exhibition spaces make significant improvements to the way art can be displayed in the galleries, increasing wall height for larger works and allowing walls to be painted to compliment exhibitions.

“We’ve made the Art Gallery a better place to come and spend time with art,” says Director Pierre Arpin. “From the front entrance to the Gallery Shop to the galleries themselves, people will experience the space and the art in a much more positive way.”

The Gallery Shop has a wide selection of locally crafted pottery, jewellery, scarves, and gifts. Previously tucked away around the corner from the entrance, the Gallery Shop’s changes will improve access and allow patrons to enter the shop from the front lobby. The Gallery Shop will carry an expanded line of books, jewellery and accessories.
