With the Internet becoming more readily available at hotels and hostels, finding a good Internet café in Portland can be a challenge. Boasting as downtown Portland’s only Internet café, Backspace has combined email and web surfing with a coffee bar, art gallery, arcade and gaming station to create a relaxed space for friends to meet in either the real world or cyberspace. Drink a latte and munch on tasty pastries while perusing Backspace’s collection of edgy artwork. Or join other gamers at one of the 20 computers with T1 connections or in a console room set up for multiple players. Backspace features a library of both newly released and older games for X-Box, Playstation 2 and Nintendo Game Cube. Or wax nostalgic with old school arcade games like Ms. Pac Man and Tron. Events ranging from break dancing to fire dancing and even *gulp* human body suspension are staged here on a regular basis. Check out their website for more details.

This is the place for Coffee Purists. Not the coolest place just to hang out (they mostly ship coffee), but if you’re really picky about you beans, you’ll find their fresh, home-ground coffee irresistible. Check them out online as well.

Starbucks – Pioneer Courthouse Square
Location: 720 SW Broadway
Phone: (503) 223-2488
Hours: Sunday thru Thursday 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Friday and Saturday 5 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Starbucks can be found on almost every corner in Pacific Northwest cities. But despite its reputation for being too mainstream for a coffee house, Starbucks does serve a good cup of Joe. The location at Pioneer Courthouse Square makes this java branch a popular fill station for Portlanders. Grab a mocha or a chai tea and relax in the red-bricked square among the fountains. When weather permits, you’ll find students studying, religious and political zealots preaching, couples chatting and more. And most of them will be knocking back some of Starbucks’ finest.
