Accommodation Redux

Hostel at Fort Mason
So far, I have stayed at only one hostel in San Francisco: Hostelling International at Fisherman’s Wharf (aka, Hostel at Fort Mason). If I didn’t feel it was my duty to check out a few more for the sake of the readers of this guide, I would never stay anywhere else.

The 170-bed hostel is in a lovely historic building at the top of the Great Meadow in Fort Mason, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. From the front of the hostel, the meadow slopes away to your right; just below that are the piers of Fort Mason Center, which houses several museums, theaters, and even a gourmet vegetarian restaurant.

Beyond the piers is the San Francisco Bay, and the view from the back of the hostel is one of the best anywhere in the city, sweeping from the Golden Gate Bridge on the left, all the way over to the Bay Bridge on the right.

All this, for only $22.50 per night; there’s no discount for HI members, but the rate does includes $2 towards breakfast at the very pleasant hostel café, Café Franco.

Because it is such a lovely place, reservations are not just recommended, I’d say they’re damn near required, especially on weekends or during the late summer/early fall. Call the hostel at (415) 771-3645 or (415) 771-7277.
