It’s Friday morning, seven in the morning. You’re alone in your bed. The ocean-like roar of traffic already pounds the air just outside your window, passing intermittently in waves commanded by the tidal-controlling forces of a solemn red light. You imagine you’re somewhere else, anywhere other than here.

Dreams, like life, begin small. First it’s you on the shores of the tranquil bay less than a mile from your house. Soon, you amble off to the beach only a few miles more up the road. Mesmerized by the noise and the haze of an early morning wake up call, your thoughts take you further.

Eyes open but not seeing, you are all powerful today, an untouchable force of nature. You deem time and space and getting dressed for work unimportant.

Drifting in a valley of lost thought, you somehow arrive on a lone stretch of crystalline sand you and an old girlfriend once stumbled upon while looking for a shop selling fresh dorado and mangos. The sun sets sea and sky on fire. The woman beside you does the same to your heart. Holding hands you and your companion sit side by side, both trying to force the moment into your permanent memory banks.

As water dances with sand and wind waltzes with palms, a single grey cloud crawls slowly across a darkening sky. The breeze turns cold, raising chill bumps on your arms. You reach over to wrap a warming arm around the woman you love and realize she has disappeared. Within seconds so too go the sand, the ocean and the falling sun.

Once again, you’re alone in your bed. Traffic is passing outside. It’s time to go to work.
