I am always amazed at the simplicity of life on an island. Having arrived on Cozumel again, I decided to go for a jog and revisit the place where my heart dwells.

A place where time stands still, even innocence has been preserved. In the United States, we are so focused on the exterior, our status, and what we have. We have so much and yet we compare and cut ourselves down, claiming that it’s not enough.

In my home town, as with most places in America, never would a man try to impress a woman unless he had all the right stuff: the job, the car, the clothes, the restaurant selection.

However, as I was jogging along, I noticed two Mexican men heading my way on a weathered bicycle. One was pedaling as the other crouched down in the small trailer made for carrying food which was attached to the front of the bike.

How humbling, I thought, and yet they were so proud of what little they possessed. Trying to get my attention, the driver pedaled faster and performed manuevers and tricks as the passenger blew me kisses.

The rickety bicycle wove past me as the trailer bobbed up and down in response to the jumps. The little passenger, hunched over like a monkey, managed to hold on with one hand while blowing endless kisses.

Suddenly, the bike swerved off the small dirt path and turned on its side into the sewer! I stopped in embarrassment and disbelief for them as the two men, who were so desperately trying to impress me, sat waist deep in the black, smelly sewage.

Fighting back my pity and also laughter, I kept a straight face as I did not want to shame them any further, and I attempted to make a quick getaway. However, as I turned on my heels to leave, both men whistled and blew me one last Cozumel kiss!
