Tuvalu Travel Facts
The Basics
Country: Tuvalu
Where is it?: Oceania, island group consisting of nine coral atolls in the South Pacific Ocean, about one-half of the way from Hawaii to Australia.
Why do people go here?: Have your own private beach for days at a time, and bring a few good books. Tuvalu is not on most traveler’s itineraries, and if that’s what you’re looking for, this is place to be. There is a conservation area and a (comparatively) crowed main island, but besides that, you’re on your own for entertainment.
What are the main entry points?: Hop on a flight, or for those with nothing else to do, a boat, from Fiji.
Currency used: Australian dollar (AUD); There is also a Tuvaluan dollar.
Country Code: 688
Area codes for Major Cities: No city codes required
Other Phone Tips: International calls are possible to make from most of the country. However, Tuvalu has no mobile phone network so it is not practical to bring your own cell phone when going to Tuvalu.
Religion: Church of Tuvalu (Congregationalist) 97%, Seventh-Day Adventist 1.4%, Baha’i 1%, other 0.6%
Population: 12,000
Ethnic Breakdown: Polynesian 96%, Micronesian 4%
Government: Parliamentary Democracy & Constitutional monarchy
Languages: Tuvaluan, English, Samoan, Kiribati (on the island of Nui)
Travel Information
Major Cities: Funafuti
Attractions: Seclusion, Marine life, Remoteness
Health Issues: No vaccination requirements for any international traveller.
Tips for Visiting
When to go: May through September has the best weather, and best chances of catching a ride on a yacht.
Specific Events/Holidays: Independence Day, 1 October (1978)
Getting Around: Bicycles and motorcycles will get you around the paved (and for the adventurous, unpaved) roads. Getting between the islands is tricky: make friends with some locals and pay for a ride, or bring your yacht.
Cheapest airport to fly into: The cheapest airport to fly into Tuvalu is the Funafuti International Airport.
Need more information?: Check out the Tuvalu travel guide for more on what to see, where to stay, and how to get there.
