Take a huge step back in history
Sluderno, Alto Adige, Italy

We have been exploring Italy this summer and, at the end of our journey, came across the most amazing medieval castle, which is open to the public and takes you right back to the olden days, not least because it has the biggest and most important private armour collection worldwide, as well as the oldest armour in existance!

This is Churburg Castle or Castel Coira, as it is called in Italian…this part of the country used to be part of Austria, and German is still the main spoken language. The imposing majestic fortress towers above the fertile valley below and has belonged to the same family (Trapp-Matsch) for the last 700 years. Ther are guided tours in German, Italian and English and if you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the Trapp family, who spend the summmer months there.

It’s definitely worth the trip. On your way there, go via Bolzano and go to the Ötzi museum, another must-do, where the Iceman is, as well as to schloß Juval, where famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner resides. The scenery is breathtaking, the country lovely, and the food wonderful!
