Poison Idea
Between HK/Tokyo and the United States

Poison Idea is the name of the hard core punk rock band I was sitting next to on my plane back from Tokyo. They all stank of stale and perspiring booze and cigarettes and immediately ordered combinations of beers and vodka orange juice. Specifically, I was in a window seat sitting next to the bass player, Chris. Before he decided to buy the 750ml bottle of duty free Jack Daniel’s, we actually had a couple fun & interesting conversations. Chris was not happy when he was told he wasn’t allowed to drink it on the plane. He said he didn’t care if he got arrested or if his band kicked him out – I guess he wasn’t getting along with them after a week of touring Japan…even though he’d just gotten a new P.I tattoo that he showed me. Somewhere in the middle of the evening he opened it and started sneaking sips. He became more and more belligerent and the crew couldn’t quiet him down. Some of my favorite lines that he hollered repeatedly across the plane included:

“My fucking pansy band”

“We’re finally home. Welcome to Portland!”

“I’ve got a GED. Fucking high school graduate from Spokane” – some reference to conflict with his band.

“I don’t care if this whole plane goes down” – something that I think will get him in the most trouble.

“I don’t need you (directed at his band). My friend Heather will hang with me.”

He tried to ask me for my phone number several times but couldn’t complete the sentence. He did ask me for a ride home which I got out of by calling Amanda on my cell and pretending she was my boyfriend.

I last saw him handcuffed to a wheel chair after the half empty bottle was finally taken away from him at baggage check before customs. In hindsight I think several of the people in baggage claim were glaring at me because they thought I was with him.
