Royal Mile, T0131-225-0973
Upstairs from the acclaimed restaurant are 6 suites of Gothic theatrical excess. Picture this: velvet drapes, 4-poster beds, 18th-century oak paneling, marble bathrooms, etc. Additionally, all rooms include a complimentary bottle of champers, homemade cookies, and a DVD and CD library. The Witchery is more than just accommodation – it will transport you back in time.

High Street Hostel
8 Blackfriars Street, T0131-557-3984
This long established backpacker hangout is cheap, lively, and provides easy access to the Royal Mile and the nightlife of Cowgate. They also run their own free Old Town tour. Book early because there are only 16 dorm beds!

The Albany Hotel’s 21 rooms reflect the New Town Georgian elegance and charm. It is only a few minutes from Princes Street. Try out the excellent basement restaurant, Haldane’s.

24 Northumberland Place
T0131-556-8140
This quaint bed & breakfast is run by David and Theresa Ingram, whose friendly and welcoming manner is sure to add to your experience in Edinburgh. Don’t be surprised if you walk right by the place the first time – it is very discreet with no sign outside. The three rooms are all very comfortable and have been decorated by a former antique dealer. There is parking in the rear of the building (very rare and quite a luxury in Edinburgh). Booking ahead is absolutely essential.

Eglinton Youth Hostel
18 Eglinton Cres, West End, T0131-337-1120
This is an SYHA hostel in a quiet street about 1 mile west of the center, near Haymarket Train Station. Most of the 160 beds are in dorms, but you can also inquire about the 12 rooms made up for groups of four. Continental breakfast is included in the rate per night. Doors close at 0200, so be wary of keeping one eye on the clock and the other on your ale. The hostel is closed in December.
