I’ve had wanderlust since I was 3 years old and crawled under our dining room table to sit at the wrought iron base. When my dad asked me what I was doing down there, I pointed to the tower-like network of bars and announced that I was visiting Paris.

I did eventually get to visit Paris. As well as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Puerto Rico. Not to mention most of the West Coast and Texas. I’ve served pizza in Paris and sold bread in Berkeley, climbed mountains in Puerto Rico and descended into caves in Spain.

By far, my most rewarding travel experiences have been those in which I have had an opportunity to spend a significant amount of time in one place. In this way, I learn the language and something about the culture of the people who live there. I consider this an anthropological approach to travel. During college, I was able to spend a year in Paris learning the language and the culture. Between walks along the Seine I met a few natives that I still see once or twice a year.

Since college ended, I have spent as much of my time as possible learning languages (most recently, Spanish) and practicing those languages in situ. I am currently pursuing a doctorate in comparative literature at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
