Shrewsbury: The Perfect Place for a Weekend in the English Countryside
Shrewsbury, England
Located near the Welsh boarder, Shrewsbury is a sleepy English town of about 70,000. It's famous for its history as a rough and tumble boarder town that saw occupancy by Romans, Celts, Saxons and Normans, all of which left their marks. From church, to castle, to houses pre-dating Columbus' voyage known as Black and Whites, the town's diversity is architecturally superb. Since my family originally comes from Shrewsbury, I've been twice to visit relatives and to try to gain and understanding of what it means to be English. And Shrewsbury's an ideal location for trying to gain such an understanding: It's a place filled with country hospitality and English charm, a place where you're likely to see, meet, and be invited to enjoy a cup of tea (or a beer!) with locals at one of the cafes as they sit and talk about anything from farming to politics. In that sense, it's one of the purest places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting; life in Shrewsbury can be described as "what you see is what you get" – and that's what I love about it. Shrewsbury makes an excellent weekend getaway destination for those in need of some rest and relaxation. The country setting and feel is often a welcome break from the city, and it's easy to pass time at one of the many local pubs or cafes. The town also offers a plethora of historical sites – many of which are free to visit – shopping, and a wide variety of dining options. I could easily spend a few weeks in Shrewsbury, particularly during the summer when the weather is at its best, although those interested in more than a quiet place to relax may get restless after a few days, which is why I suggest a weekend trip. All prices listed below are current as of November 2005 and are listed in GBP. Prices are subject to change. This country restaurant offers traditional European dishes, including some vegetarian food, although the steak is their signature entrée. The Swam is a nice place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, including the log fire. Prices: 2.50-17. What to Do Shrewsbury is home to many interesting historical and archeological sites. Below is a brief list of what one could see while there. Shrewsbury Abbey Founded in 1083 the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter and St Paul, the Abbey is still in remarkable condition and is still being used as a place of worship by Christians after nearly one thousand years. Orchestral and choral concerts are regularly held in the Abbey. The Abbey is open to visitors between 10 and 4:45 daily. Tour information and concert schedules can be found online. Shrewsbury Castle Shrewsbury is home to several castles, but one in particular stands out. The original portion of Shrewsbury Castle was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror but additions have rendered the castle in its current form. The castle is well maintained and houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum, where one can find military uniforms, weapons, pictures and medals dating back to the eighteenth century. I am not a war buff per se, but I found this museum to be particularly interesting and well laid out. Admission to the museum: Seniors 1.25, Adults 2.50, under 18 free. The castle grounds are free and not to be missed. Phone: 01743 361196. Vintage Vehicle Show If you happen to be in Shrewsbury in early June, be sure to see the Vintage Vehicle Show. On display you'll find restored cars, motorcycles, tractors, steam engines and farm equipment. You'd be hard pressed to find a comparable collection in the United States. The motorcycles, many of which predate WWII, were especially worth the visit. More information. Adventure If you're like me, you love historical sites. But after day or two, I find myself ready for something new. Commando Paintball & Border Quadtrekking: Quadtrekking is the European word for ATVing. If you've never been ATVing, or haven't gone in the European countryside, you're missing out. There's nothing quite like being able to drive just about anywhere you want, as fast as you want, with no regard for roads and street regulations! And the countryside near Shrewsbury yields beautiful views, especially during sunset. Also offered is a wide variety of paintball games and equipment. Prices vary based on rental length and equipment. More information can be found at 07970 884694. Directions online. The Edge Mountainboarding Centre What is mountainboarding? It's a cross between snowboarding and skateboarding, and involves riding down the mountain on a modified skateboard with giant wheels. Rentals and lessons are available, and speaking from experience, it's relatively easy to learn. Several courses are available to cater to beginners and experts. Prices depend on rental length and equipment. More information can be found at 01952 727491. Directions online.
