A stay-at-home childhood that kept me grounded, literally–I didn’t join the aviation age until I was twenty-one–also kept me from thinking of myself as a “traveler” or a “travel writer”. That changed after my first transoceanic flight, which took me across the Pacific for a year exploring Australia. I came back with stories (about earthquakes, invasive weeds, rotten grapes, humongous fish, hostels in caves, surf competitions), stories I wanted to tell the world.

Now in my senior year in creative writing at the University of British Columbia, I’m temporarily grounded again. Happily, I’ve realized that my hometown and province are a traveler’s dream. I love hiking, running, rollerblading and cheering at hockey games, all perfect Vancouver pastimes. Highlights from close-to-home travels include watching a grey whale dive under my kayak in the Broken Islands, dancing with retired hippies in the Gulf Islands, avoiding bears and mosquitoes in the province’s interior, and enjoying the many cultures that enliven Vancouver’s streets.

Next up, travel-wise? A visit to Seattle’s winter waterland; a month exploring North America by rail; and a stint as a volunteer at an adventure race in the American mountain states. I’m learning a little about photography and a bit more about Spanish and hope to use both on a trip to South America in the near future.
