Need some help planning a road trip? The internet has a plethora of road trip resources. RoadtripAmerica.com has been around since 1994 and to my knowledge has the most resources and information. The site covers the basics and gives advice on where to go, where to stay, etc. There are articles on almost any road trip topic and also a forum where anyone can post their experiences and get advice. What’s really great about this website is that it has information on the little things no one thinks about when they plan a road trip; like how to get internet access or travel by motorcycle. They also have a fantastic recipe for muffins to bake before you leave.
Highways may hold as much pleasure as the stops along the way. The U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration has established an online effort to promote certain highways in the U.S. Check out byways.org for a list of these highways that are recognized as “All American Roads or National scenic by-ways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational or scenic quality.”
An article I recommend to everyone planning on taking a road trip is Genevieve Brown’s “Five Features of a Fantastic Road trip.” It can be found on the independenttraveler.com website. This website also has worthy resources but is not as extensive as Road trip America.
For the more quirky-spirited road-tripper try roadsideamerica.com. This site is a guide to “off-beat tourist attractions” like where to find Napoleon’s horse, shoe trees and white squirrels.
If you have no idea where to start bellhop.com is a website that actually maps out your stops, finds places to stay (based on your budget), and calculates how much money you’ll spend on gas. It even has a list of average gas prices for each state. Pretty amazing. This will provide a rough outline of the trip to build upon by adding your own details.
Planning a road trip these days is not a difficult task with the number of online resources at anyone’s fingertips. I hope the websites above will be helpful. Until next time–steer clear of deer.
