Best of the Mayan Riviera – Tulum, Mexico, North America
Many Americans and Canadians have visited Cancun, Mexico and sadly realized that the culture and beauty have been completely overwhelmed by commercialism, spring breakers and beer. They have now ventured down the coast of the "Riveria Maya" to the all inclusive resorts and a few of the exclusive gated communities that now dot the coastline. However, my fiance and I recently found the most romantic, beautiful section of the entire coast in Tulum, Mexico.
We rented a car and drove down the coast. Tulum is situated about two hours south of Cancun and one hour south of Playa del Carmen. The town is still very small, however, there are a number of good restaurants, hostels and an internet cafe. We drove down the beach road past a number of cute boutique hotels with restaurants until we reached the entrance to the Sian Ka'an Reserve. We decided to stay here, at the most remote end of the beach, at Rancho San Eric in a georgeous beach villa called Casa Blanca. We purchased groceries in town at San Francisco de Assisi and made our food in the house kitchen the first few nights.
We were able to roam the beach, sans clothes, for miles into the Sian Ka'an Reserve where there are no houses or hotels or people! We made love on the beach (and my fiance is very shy so you know we must have had a lot of privacy).
Later during the week, we found a number of cute restaurants including Zamas and Posada Magherita. Zamas is the "happening spot" with live music and whole cooked fish. Posada Magherita is the most romantic little Italian Kitchen – we thought we were in Cinque Terra! The owners of Zamas and Magheritas are both very friendly, and even visited our table during the meal.
All in all, I think Tulum is the best place to visit for the price, convenience and proximity. Cabo San Lucas is a luxury vacation. Costa Rica is an adventure. Tulum is pure relaxation and romance – we may go back for our honeymoon!
