Inexpensive Hotels in Paris – Paris, France

Rules of thumb for hotel hunting in Paris:

Never accept the first price quote. Ask about discounts.
Never accept the first room offered. Check to see if there is a room that is more spacious, quieter, etc.

Although you can find bed and breakfasts (13.60 Euro rooms with 6 to 10 beds), or camping (through Gites de France), you can also find modest lodging in hotels for as little as 20.58 Euros. This usually consists of a room with a sink, and bathroom facilities down the hall. For 55 Euros, you can have a room with toilet, shower and television.

You can book 3-star hotels from 78 Euros to 115 Euros in great neighborhoods. Some inexpensive hotel chains such as Formule 1 and Campanile offer competitive rates.

A good resource for more hotel information is Time Out’s Paris Free Guide – Spring 2002 or the Time Out website.

Another invaluable guide to inexpensive Paris hotels is:
Paris Pas Cher 2002 by Anne and Alain Riou
Parispascher@voila.fr
If you pick up your copy in Paris it costs 14.48 Euros (cheaper than Amazon’s rates!). If you use this guidebook, be sure to remind the hotel owner when you call that you have read the rates in Paris Pas Cher. One hotel owner quoted me double the price until I mentioned the book!! Caveat emptor. Paris Pas Cher not only gives you great info about hotels, but also restaurants, shopping and museums. It is invaluable!!!

Here are a few hotel suggestions to get you started. Of these hotels, we’ve only had friends stay at the Hotel Arcadie. We’ve picked the other hotels in our walks through different Paris neighborhoods according to price and location. Staff members were friendly and most spoke some English. Send us feedback if you choose to stay at any of these hotels.

Hotel au Palais de Chaillot
35 Avenue Paymound-Poincare (3-star)
Metro: Trocadero
76.98 Euros to 109.76 Euros
If your heart is set on staying on the Right Bank within easy walking distance to the Arc de Triomphe, the ‘Champs’ and a great view of the Eiffel Tower, this is your place.

Montparnasse:

Campanile Maine-Montparnasse
146 Avenue du Maine
67-73 Euros (Less expensive than the Arcadie at the same Metro stop!)
Metro: Gaite
Very friendly and helpful staff.

Hotel Arcadie Montparnasse (3-star)
71 Avenue du Maine
Metro: Gaite
Normal Rates: 100 Euros. Ask about special discount rates for stays that include weekends (78 Euros including breakfast). Friendly and helpful staff.

Hotel Yllen Eiffel (3-star)
196 Rue de Vaugirard (15th Arrond.)
115 Euros
Metro: Volontaires
Brochure describes this hotel as “unobtrusive luxury”. We agree. Rue de Vaugirard is a great window-shopping, building-gawking street that finishes in front of the Luxembourg Gardens and La Sorbonne. It’s the longest street in Paris.

Hotel Henri IV
25 Place Dauphine
Metro: Cite or Pont Neuf
This hotel was built at the same time as Pont Neuf i.e. 450 years ago. For as little as 20.58 Euros, you can sleep on Ile de la Cite, near the epicenter of Paris, Notre Dame de Paris. Be sure to specify the rates as quoted in Paris Pas Cher! Better yet, take the guidebook with you and you’ll get a free breakfast.

Hotel du Parc (2-star)
6 rue Jolivet (Montparnasse)
Check for rates on the internet.
Close to the Montparnasse train station.

Studio Hotel
25 Rue Alain Chartier (15th Arrond.)
Metro: Convention
30-65 Euros
Located close to lively cafes at Convention, a Parisian neighborhood devoid of tourists.

Sport Hotel (2-star)
258 Avenue Daumesnil (near Bois de Vincennes)
Metro: Michel Bizot
Moderately priced at 55-58 Euros
Email: Sporthotel@wanadoo.fr
A quiet neighborhood far from the tour buses. If you like to walk or jog in the park, this is a great location.

Luxury Splurge for a night:

Trianon Rive Gauche Hotel (3-star)
1 Bis et 3 rue de Vaugirard
Metro: Cluny/Odeon/St. Michel
115 Euros to 145 Euros.
Located steps away from the Luxembourg Garden, the Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter, you’ll feel as if you’ve walked into a Right Bank lobby. This is part of a hotel chain which includes four other Left Bank hotels:
Hotel Marroniers – also listed in several guidebooks, has a great location close to the Boulevard St. Germain nightlife.
Hotel de Seine
Hôtel Des Deux Continents
Welcome Hotel

Bed and Breakfast
13.60 Euros
Metro: Bonne Nouvelle
Tel. 33 01 40 26 83 08

Happy Hunting!
