It is extremely rare for Tarifa to experience more than two days in a row without any wind. For this reason, the city is known among water sport enthusiasts as the capital of windsurfing. “Kite surfing” has also gained significant popularity in recent years, and both sports make up the majority of tourist influx to the region.
This is obvious with a quick glance up and down the main drag, Batalla del Salado. The street is lined with surf shops and kite schools offering deals to the eager tourist. Here’s a list of the major kite surfing and windsurfing schools in the area. Almost all of the beginning lessons are done on the beach, as most companies will not allow a beginner to get in the water until at least the second day. All prices listed here are from the summer of 2002. Prices include equipment, lesson and sometimes a few other freebies depending on the school, and are of course subject to change.
