I didn't know its unusual to take shoes off when going indoors. I live in Canada and it would be considered rude to leave them on. Its more comfortable without them and it could make your house dirty to keep them on.

In Sweden where I'm from you always remove your shoes. It is very impolite to walk inside the house with your shoes on!

Besides, I don't quite understand why you would want to keep them on? Especially in countries like England where they have carpets covering the whole floor..? Could someone explain?

I feel like this is supposed to make me respond "Ewwww asia is gross and weird!" That seems an inconsistent message from a source that's meant to be for learning about and exploring new places and cultures. I get that, yeah, sometimes things ARE gross and weird to outsiders, but it's a fine line between making a remark about how something makes you feel and sounding like you're superior to what you're observing. I think this article passes into that superior tone -- "Eww, Asia is icky!" -- and that bums me out.

As a westerner living in Asia, I encountered a lot of these weird customs.
One that really freaked me out was that in china the don't use diapers for the little kids, instead, they just cut a hole on their pants and let them release themselves wherever they go.
Its really not pleasant to find baby shit everywhere from a corridor in the supermarket to your building's elevator.
