I promise myself that I would spend less and save more.I got rid of my contract phone and now has prepaid with StraightTalk..a phone from WalMart of all places! I now have more minutes than ever (unlimited), text and web for only $45! Half of what I used to pay plus better reception. I was a little skepticle at first buying a phone from Walmart but no more! I’ve also been bringing lunches to work. Hey, every little thing adds up!

Might be useful...if I wasn't already doing most of these things! But I guess a good article to pass on to those who ask me how I fund my lifestyle.

Thank you for this great article! It inspired me to make a list of ten things I do to save money for a trip. It's solid advice for everyone, not just travelers.

If you make enough money the automatic savings work well. I used this out of college and maxed my 401k, IRA and created a 'big things' account. Vacations and the like. Then I looked at what I had left and planned to that. If you move to a new city this is a good way to start out as you never get used to spending all your money.

I use software on the iPhone to manage my budget, but you could easily do it on paper, Palm or other other device. I customize categories I'm interested in. It's shocking how much things like coffee, snacks, drinks and other things add up. It's easy to cut them out, or reduce how much you spend. Going cash is a great idea. I've done that for the past 2 years and I spend much less. Don't depend on the bank to track it for you. You need to know your daily averages and if you don't spend the effort you won't pay attention to it.

Consider that you are already on the budget trip during the saving period.

Depends on the planed travel style, take it as a training. For example using public transport, sleep on a thermarest, cook meals etc.

I think the best way to save money to travel is to move abroad and teach English.

You will already be in a foreign country so your airfare expenses will be less.

You can earn money while traveling so there is much less need have a lot of savings.

As a foreigner you will have much less pressure to consume so you will have more savings.

Stop procrastinating and just go!
