reat list; I’d like to do ‘em all. I really only know one of these drives very well; the drive from San Francisco to Portland. It’s a good one, for sure, but I’d maybe advocate leaving the coast in Northern California and coming to I-5 in the middle.

Two years ago I did two weeks on the road between Las Vegas (where I live) and West Texas/Panhandle region. My only regret was that it was only two weeks, although technically you can make the drive in a weekend. Especially adore Jerome (outside Sedonna) and Palo Duro Canyon SP outside Amarillo.

Surveying the armored shore, Jim Titus explains how the natural sinking of the shoreline and the slow but steady sea-level rise, mostly due to climate change, have driven the bay's water more than a foot higher over the past century. Reinforcing the eroding shore with a sea wall held the water back, but it also choked off the natural supply of sand that had replenished the beach. What sand remained gradually sank beneath the rising water.

Another good San Francisco one - head south on Highway 1 to Monterey, Carmel, Los Angeles and then across the Mojave Desert to Vegas. A classic drive, and there are few finer routes than the PCH. OK, it's not a weekend drive at all (we took our time and did it in 14, including taking a full week to get to LA) but a truly great driving adventure nonetheless. You can read about it here http://www.thetraveleditor.com/toplists/general/A_Classic_Drive_San_Francisco_to_Las_Vegas/352/

Great list; I'd like to do 'em all. I really only know one of these drives very well; the drive from San Francisco to Portland. It's a good one, for sure, but I'd maybe advocate leaving the coast in Northern California and coming to I-5 in the middle.

The views of Mt. Shasta are wonderful, and with potential stops in Shakespearian Ashland, at Crater Lake, and in beautiful Bend you have a trip that in my opinion is even grander than the coast.
