Your insight into the difference in an expat blog and a pure travel blog is spot on, which makes me wonder if I should change my blog address :). I am an ex band chick , ex science geek , ex attorney at large....and now twitching expat Mom of 2.

Great topic, and the author is spot on.

I serve it up on http://lifewihtouashirt.com Been doin git for a year and a half now.

I'm at this same point. Conceding to write about traveling when actually LIVING abroad is like conceding to go out and drink with the backpackers you meet everyday. In both cases, I want to grab a pencil and stab myself in the temple 29 times.

But taking good pictures and sharing the little stories that pop up from day to day like getting my ear chewed on by a rat in the middle of the night things fresh. Sometimes I just post a picture and people love it.

True Expat for 16 months.
Sold it all and live in Nicaragua and Brazil:)

Great list of expat blogs. However, you missed a wonderful one: http://www.shanghaishangrila.blogspot.com . It follows the lives of two Americans who leave the comfort of Los Angeles move to Shanghai. The blog is extremely well written, witty, and informative. I am confident that all who read it will fall in love with the story of these two!

Great article and interesting blogs. My own expat blog is at www.insearchofalifelessordinary.blogspot.com and follows my decision to head overseas in the summer of 2003 with my wife, two dogs and the entire contents of our house. Looking to find a different way of living for ourselves, we made our home in Vancouver, Ottawa, then Sydney. The blog offers insights into, and recollections of, our search for a life less ordinary.

Some interesting sights for me to explore, thanks.

I'll also shill my blog, Culturally Discombobulated, while I'm here. http://anthonywindram.wordpress.com It's about my struggle living in the world of Ihops and Dennys. Imagine Alistair Cook without the charm, talent and contacts and youve pretty much got it.

Hi Jennifer,
I think it's wonderful you're going to Italy to live.
We left New Jersey in 2000, and have lived in St Petersburg Russia since then. My blog keeps to one topic an entry, based on my own experiences and also research, and is my favorite hobby.
American Russia Observations http://www.amrusob.blogspot.com.
Also, I admire the flow of your writing!

I love Jessica Spiegel's description of the expat vs the world traveler: "Once you’re settled in, it can be hard to continue to look at where you live as a traveler might." After a decade and a half of living on two small islands, England and Japan, I felt as though I'd obtained a practical degree in cultural anthropology. I recently started up a blog, Seen the Elephant (http://seentheelephant.blogspot.com/), on what makes some of us actually settle in far-flung places and what it's like when we come home again. Can we settle back in?

Many of the bloggers mentioned in Jessica's article, as well as the commenters above, are prime candidates for leaving comments and/or doing guest posts on Seen the Elephant. I hope to be in touch with you, one way or another!

I love these! I have a unique blog, Educating Global Nomads (www.educatingglobalnomads.com) where I discuss important issues that families face as they move their children around the world to include transitions and resiliency for our Third Culture Kids, planning for the next move and choosing the right school, how to best serve our children with special needs, and when boarding schools are the right choice. I also discuss what to do when our kids struggle and things start getting rough. Lastly, I talk about planning for college/university and how to go through the application process.
