I currently live in Japan and have never tried to hitch-hike! Sounds like a fascinating adventure though. I know whenever I’m lost I get bombarded with friendly locals who grab my arm and gently guide me to where I need to go! And yes, they’re infinitely curious about learning about where you’re from, what you eat…etc…

I hitch-hiked in Japan back in 1974-1975 – your stories are similar to ones I could tell from then. Went back again in 2005 – didn’t hitch this time, but met some nice people through SERVAS.

Nice article – it brings back very happy memories of a trip I made around Kyushu in 1999. I am glad my belief that Kysuhu people are especially kind still holds true.

Fun article and not the least bit surprising as I’ve had numerous similar encounters with the Japanese. You should read Alan Booth’s books in which he tries to walk across Japan but is constantly asked to get in the car by “helpful” Japanese drivers. http://traveljapanblog.com/wordpress/
