Thats true , when i was there in Malana i did learn a few more facts about the village. Although i am not really sure about they descending from the Greeks but one of the reasons of not touching other people is that they consider themselves as the highest class of the Hindus but are not sure of our caste. They even have a problem with the other locals of himachal. People of Malana also have their own dialect which is not spoken anywhere else but there, this language is unknown to the other himachali's too. Locals call it 'Rakshas ka bhasa', language of the demons.
Malana is the oldest democracy as said but the people there are uneducated. Only one man so far has actually been to college in Kullu. People dont even prefer law enforcement for their disputes but then things are changing right now.
We all know what its famous for but with all its history and legacy i found them to be quite greedy, i mean the dont prefer money but they would be looking for electronics, it gives them a high. Also about the rs.1000 fine is the same with Rashol . Rashol also has that carved into a stone in front a temple as you enter the village but people there are much more sensible and friendly.
The houses that stand in Malana now were remade, that includes the temple that stands right in the middle of the village after a fire the almost burnt everything a few years back.
All of this is soon to change as Malana has now become easily aces sable by road after the construction of the Malana hydro project.
