Seattle – So many people call in the rainy city and they’re right. This last winter
was crazy with rain. Everywhere you looked it as cloudy and raining. I think half of the people who moved here from New York and California went home – it was terrible. It has
rained so hard and their is so much moisture in the ground I may not have to water
my plants and yard till August.
And yet many of us who were born here stay on. My grandparents came here
in the late 19th century. My mother’s people were from Kentucky and were
connected to General Grant of Civil War fame. My father’s parents were from Sweden via
Minnesota. I love the city for its strong multiracial mix, its beautiful water views,
and its great international district.
In the summer if I was to come I would visit…..
1. International District – Chinatown
For food, visit a Chinese Herbalist – Choys Herbs
515 Maynard
Uwajima Department Store for fresh food, Japanese books, etc.
2. Pioneer Square
For the top jazz in the U.S. Did you know that Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Jimmie Hendrix came from Seattle? Get a multi club pass and visit
10 clubs for $10-15
3. Public Market
See Seattle’s prime tourist location but also where you can get some great handicrafts, a t-shirt, or fresh food for your dinner.
4. Seattle Art Museum – 1st & Union
The best African Art exhibit, great modern art and photography.
5. Seattle Asian Art Museum – 15th & Galer
Outstanding ancient and recent Asian art. A must see for anyone who likes Asian decor and scrolls, screes, jade, etc.
6. African American Churches at 10:45am on Sundays
Great gospel music at Mt. Zion Baptist with traditional preaching 19th & Madison on Capitol Hill.
7. Capitol Hill/ Broadway
Seattles Gay Lesbian Community

Located in between Puget
Sound & Lake Washington in the most
northwest corner of the United States.
Accomodations
The best are
small inns and Guest Houses.
The Virgina Mason Inn on Seneca St.
is great.
Transport
20 minutes from the airport. Airporter bus
is $10 – cabs are expensive. Several
van companies called Airport Express are in
the $12-18 range.
Great city transit system.
Money
US Currency – You’ll need a lot
unless you stay in the hostels, eat in
Chinatown, and take Metro transit
everywhere. Seattle can be done
cheaply in this manner.
